Improve Access, Connectivity, And Safety

The ADS Demonstration program evaluates the safety and data flow of autonomous vehicles (AVs) in various environments while fostering public-private collaboration. These projects aim to improve access, connectivity, and safety, offering alternatives to single-occupant driving.

The collected data will support the development of safety standards for AVs nationwide, with measurable and scalable results.

This program includes the following demonstrations:

Project 1:

PRESTO Rossmoor

Autonomous Shuttles for Senior Community

PRESTO Rossmoor is a pilot program offering zero-emission autonomous shuttles for seniors in Walnut Creek’s over-55 community. Launched in summer 2024 with Beep, two shuttles run a one-mile loop, stopping at key locations with onboard attendants.

The goal is to familiarize residents with autonomous tech, gather feedback, and shape the future of transportation in Contra Costa County.

Project 2:

PRESTO Martinez

Accessible Health Care Transportation Shuttles

PRESTO Martinez will address challenges related to health care needs by providing free, on-demand shuttle service for patients at the Contra Costa County hospital. Service will also be offered to residents making general trips around Martinez during off-peak hours, complementing the existing County Connection public bus service.

CCTA is partnering with May Mobility, a leader in AV development and deployment, to introduce a fleet of seven self-driving vehicles, three of which will be wheelchair accessible. The AVs operate at a maximum speed of 35 mph and will have a trained County Connection attendant on board to ensure prompt and safe service.

Project 3:

Personal Mobility

Connected Vehicles on I-680 Corridor

The Personal Mobility pilot in San Ramon is a key step in preparing Contra Costa County for the future of automated vehicles. Using Nissan self-driving cars and Verizon video systems along a two-mile stretch of I-680, the project monitors traffic to improve flow and safety. It also adds smart technology at intersections to alert vehicles of nearby pedestrians and cyclists. Building on previous research, the pilot aims to reduce accidents, congestion, and gas usage, while optimizing shared transportation through AI-driven improvements.
